BLOG 1-4-23: Are you Listening to Yourself?

This is a question my husband would ask me as I recited a list of 100 actions I intended to accomplish in the next 24 hours or when I would discuss how I wanted someone else to change their agenda so I could accomplish mine.

This worthy question is about awareness, active listening, smart questions and setting intentions. Developing collaborative cultures, and building and sustaining relationships, business and personal, are enhanced when we listen to ourselves before we proceed and during our interactions with others.

What is my body telling me as I participate in this difficult conversation? What is the impact on my business or personal relationships as I attempt to implement this change? How will this action impact the overall goal and the relationship?

Active listening and smart questions go hand in hand. They are skills that can be developed. I teach these skills and strategies in my Solution Session® which is an innovative, problem-solving session focused on actionable outcomes.

The key is to learn to ask clear questions that go beyond a yes or no answer.

Some of the key questions to ask ourselves are:
  • What do I want to accomplish with this action? Why?
  • What is a reasonable time frame? What are the steps?
  • How will this action benefit others? Negatively impact others? Enhance the relationship?
  • Do I have a solid plan?
As leaders it is important that we listen to ourselves, our questions, and our desires for our impact.
